Reconstructing summer intensity in the High Arctic from stem length growth of a dwarf shrub

چکیده
Annual stem length growth of the circumarctic dwarf shrub Cassiope tetragona has proven to be a reliable proxy for past and ongoing climate change in the Arctic. This reliability is based on its strong linear relationship with monthly climate parameters. Monthly means are however coarse units for prediction of growth in marginal regions with short growing seasons. Growing degree-days (GDD) are a potential alternative. GDD is a measure for growing season intensity and defined as the cumulative temperature above a given threshold, usually set at 5 oC (GDD5). The aims of this study were to test whether GDD5 is better predictor of growth than monthly mean temperatures over a high to sub arctic climatic gradient, and to reconstruct past high arctic GDD5. For this reconstruction, two shoot length records from Svalbard were used, 154 and 169 years in length. These records are the two longest growth chronologies for this species developed so far. Correlative analysis shows that GDD5 is a better predictor of annual shoot length growth than mean monthly temperatures, both at C. tetragona’s northern and southern distribution limit, as well as at its assumed climatic optimum. Svalbard Airport GDD5 was successfully reconstructed back to 1885. This reconstruction shares 61% of variance with the instrumental record. This opens up the possibility to obtain an arctic network of climate reconstructions with high temporal and spatial resolution through construction of C. tetragona stem length chronologies.

Reindeer grazing increases summer albedo by reducing shrub abundance in Arctic tundra
Previous studies have shown that climate warming is causing shrub cover to increase at high latitudes. Increased shrub cover generally lowers surface albedo, which results in higher energy absorption and further warming. In parts of Fennoscandia, herbivory is known to control vegetation height and abundance, and thus preventing this positive feedback. Here, we combine field measurements of albe...
متن کاملCombining Research and Education: Bioclimatic Zonation along a Canadian Arctic Transect
Scientists and students from five countries combined research and education in an investigation of bioclimatic zonation along a Canadian Arctic transect, from Amund Ringnes Island and Ellesmere Island in the north to the Daring Lake research camp at the southern edge of the tundra in Nunavut. We addressed three important needs in Arctic science: 1) to integrate education and research, 2) to pro...
متن کاملNo divergence in Cassiope tetragona (L.) D. Don: persistence of growth response along a latitudinal temperature gradient and under long-term experimental warming
The dwarf shrub Cassiope tetragona is increasingly used for arctic climate reconstructions, the reliability of which depends on a linear climate-growth relationship. Here, we examine the stability of the relationship between climate and annual growth parameters by using a spatial scale from the high to subarctic and long-term experimental warming at a high arctic site. We created four growth ch...

Tamarix sp. Shrub species are extended in steppe and salt marsh areas. These species have adapted to the most hard climatic conditions. Therefore, it is distributed in the driest regions of Iran. The native plants are rarely used for landscape in Iran. So, identifying native plants that has the potential to be ornamental, in addition to the attractiveness of landscape can prevent soil erosion. ...
متن کاملPotential of C and X Band SAR for Shrub Growth Monitoring in Sub-Arctic Environments
The Arctic and sub-Arctic environments have seen a rapid growth of shrub vegetation at the expense of the Arctic tundra in recent decades. In order to develop better tools to assess and understand this phenomenon, the sensitivity of multi-polarized SAR backscattering at C and X band to shrub density and height is studied under various conditions. RADARSAT-2 and TerraSAR-X images were acquired f...
